Baby Robins. The final chapter.

No really. Sadly I report to you all, dear blog friends… They are dead. All three of the were in the nest, cold & stuff the morning after I took a great video, that I’ll post next week..
So sad. Again, I’m positive I was not touching anywhere near the nest or birds. I only went out when momma was away etc. I feel so bad. Nature sucks.

I was creatively using the baby robins experiment to keep me positive as my 14 year old best dog friend Amos was in the late late winter of his life. The day after my dog passed last Sunday, so did the robins. I’ll write tons about Amos when I’m ready for that. Xoxo.

So nature sucked last week. Suck it nature (I’m in my “pissy” stage of grief & I don’t give a hoot). Lol. Xo
What I did before I left on this mini vaca, that I’m currently on – 4 days camp / 4 days big city trip- was plant this! It’s a dixi cup kids bird gourd!

Purge a thing a day ~in May

Motivated by a blog I read recently about simplifying life – she purged one thing every day for a year, I’m onto a new challenge. We seem to move annually on my birthday at the beginning of October & I’m shocked every year at how much we acquire. Buying, craigslist scores, hand me downs, thrifting etc… This year is no different. Whether we buy or rent we are moving off this sland (& moving over to the big island & 30 mins south), by October 1st!

About 4x a year, I get a big box out and label it “Sally Ann”. This month’s goal? I’m going to get rid of “a thing a day” and show you at the end of the month. I’m aiming for more than that.

Breaking news! I’m having Saturday morning coffee & blogging in bed with my love. He has agreed to join me & have his own box of 30! Whether we thrift it, Recycle, compost, give away… a thing a day (x2) is leaving.

Side confessional: there’s an annual children’s centre garage sale on this island that we attend every year. It’s May 5. I’ll behave, I swear. Mostly just hoping for record scores for my record a blog. Lol. And pottery. And art supplies. Oh go ON!

Also, I finished a book my sweety got me for Xmas:

20120428-113143.jpgIt’s full of inspiring artists & projects that are enviro friendly. Reducing, repurposing, upcycling, recycle. Great education about toxic products we are all guilty of using in our studios & recipes for healthier ones. Also of interest to me were the enviro community art projects.

If you don’t have a fabulous husband like mine who gets me great gifts.. here’s the link to ordering it for yourself: green guide for artists ~ to buy

What could you get rid of this month?

The Big Spring

The Big Year. This was a corny movie about birders but it had some whimsey and motivated me to photograph more of the wildlife in my yard. The eagle photo essay is from Rebecca Spit Provincial Park the same day. I haven’t taken so many eagle photos since living on the Gwaii. I’m enjoying my “old” SLR these days.

Day 3 of the new feeder up & I have hummingbirds! I haven’t caught them on film just yet. stay tuned. lol. I hung a wild bird seed feeder low on a sliding door to torment my cats. It’s working. Yeah me. I’ve placed daffodils from my yard in each of my therapy offices & in busy rooms in our house. Now the tulips and lilacs are up. Double yeah!

oh how I’ve missed you blog

Well here we meet again blog friends.. me by the woodstove with the winds howling and once again impending doom of power outage hangs over us. I’m solo, with my man at work today and possibly not even home tonight if the 80km wind gusts keep up ~ there will be no ferry home. Fingers crossed for spoons tonight with my man!    It’s been an eventful and somewhat creative while since we’ve spoken. I considered doing a V-log today but you have to pay to post videos on wordpress.com unless they are uploaded to youtube first. I digress ~ here’s what I’ve been up to.

We have been enjoying my record a day BLOG project which is now in month FOUR or twelve! It has been the soundtrack to many creative festivities around the pad, including baking. Here we baked more Theryaki smoked salmon tarts with Mr. Music maker’s help! And a one and a two and a …

The record blog has been getting a great response and has a ton of followers. What a riot going through all different genres and styles. There’s a really romantic slowness to the vinyl process. The stink of the cover albums, the inserts, the album art. Deciding to get up to flip over to Side B. All great.

Check it out if you wish ~ just for the records BLOG 365 project

I also made a another batch of peanut butter balls ~see my blog here for the recipe near xmas.

We had an awesome visit from my in~laws recently. Thankfully the weather was excellent FINALLY and we spent some time down at the beach. We gathered oysters and clams and then were told we couldn’t take them home (by a strange fella on the shore with no evidence but a fantastic story of  a shipping container that flipped over in the ocean and some chemicals released into the local waters).

resin results

well hello blog friends! it’s been a week long hang over from the THING A DAY project I did in Feb! Phew. It was super fun and sparked me in all different directions. This past few weeks, we’ve been dealing with our aging pup (who is not in pain and happy on meds for now, thanks for asking).. so I’ve been focusing on that, lots of work and my record a day blog.

A couple days ago, I had the pleasure of making a huge mess and having huge fun with resin experiments. After watching youtube videos and buying some.. I decided to try all sorts of molds, objects embedded, beach objects used etc.. I had some success with food colouring and using paint pallette molds, while the chocolate plastic molds held my creations tightly after curing (24 hours)..no matter how much PAM spray I used ahead of time. hm.

Here’s some photos of the messy fun and creations. I used porquipine needles, paintings, photos, charms, beach glass, plastic animals, flowers, material, buttons, washer pendents, coral, shells,  dead bugs… I practiced on a painted canvas. Resin is equal to 7 layers or more of lacquer and can be used to create depth which you can then paint on top of again etc. very cool stuff. Still to learn: polishing, drilling holes, filing edges. see if you can spot my new easel!?

the screamin heebie jeebies & wild rose hips

Nothing brings newly weds together quite like both being sick at the same time. Neither of us have even been sick since we met (2.5 years ish ago) so this week was an extra special one. We are on day 4 of cold & flu ~he missed work for 3 days, I missed my 4 day weekend. But we are on the mend. Cabin fever has for sure set in, especially for our dog. It gives me a day on the couch under several variations of blanket, to update my 365 blogs! The record blog is getting a great response and I am loving all the music and research that goes with the posts. If you haven’t been over there it’s just for the records ~another 365 project BLOG click on this coloured link.

For today, here’s a running photography commentary of a few of the things I’ve been making this week:

rose hips / rose hip tea

These are the rose hips I picked at our place in the fall, dried out and made tea with last week. This week we drank jars of it for the Vit C!!

the chick is annoying but there are great facts about rose hips in this video.

We bottled wine & beer but have been too sick to really try either of them! I got my sweety grolsch style glass bottles with ceramic tops on Craigslist via a German brewery.

we bottled homebrew Pinot Grigos ~yum & my sweety's first crack at a honey ale with homepicked blackberries!

thai smoked salmon, pesto pinwheels

grew some cat-grass (xmas gift from dad) & Estevan went a bit psycho

winter storm walk scores

My 13.5 year old,  young dog and I hit the beach today. What better thing to do on a dark, rainy, windy afternoon ~when the weather has basically sucked for 2 weeks? Hit the beach! Here’s some photos of what we found and where we went. Wonder what I’ll make with these? Suggestions?

Snapper snowflakes… for dogs

That’s right.. another excuse to make dogbones for my dog…  Xmas party season.

Last Xmas my practice co-horts raved about the dogbones I baked and gave out at potlucks. So this year when asked, it was easy to oblige, as every day with our aged pup is a chance to spoil him. He was such a big helper standing over me in the kitchen for 2 hours! Here’s something that I learned that made my life much easier. The last time I made turkey dogbones (see previous blog entries) I froze three big balls of batter in ziplocs. I simply opened the wedding freezers and found 4 balls ~2 were the snapper  and 2 were turkey. I thawed, rolled, cookie cut & baked them up in no time. The snapper recipe was a little lack luster so I added peanut butter and garlic salt. Sounds gross but dogs love the ingredients.

This year I went the silly extra step of putting them in little santa bags with bows. And yes, Amos taste tested each batch and got all the ends, saved in a jar on the counter (which already requires refilling).

Happy Christmas to the mutts that make us so happy all year.

Famous Amos

I took this photo last night. He was dreaming of a caribou chase on the great plains, last night.

(but he was actually curled up on 2 sheepskins, on his chais lounge, by the woodstove). xo.

Dog whisperer

beach @ our place on Quadra

My sweetheart of a frisky moose turned 13 years this month! For this honourable occasion, I baked him halibut dogbones (see posting last month), got him an accupuncturist and a dog whisperer! Amos had a homevisit of chiropractic and accunputure needles all down his back end, hips & knees. He is like a puppy after treatments.

This is an interesting read if you have an older doggie: click here for article about dog accupuncture

camping on Quadra this spring

His dog whisperer is an awesome local man that sees most of the island’s dogs at some point. Our pets love him. He does mass dog hikes up mountains with 20 dogs at a time… daily, behavior management and pet sitting. “Amos… Let’s go!” When the Whisperer was away in India recently, the womyn that covered for him created this dog BLOG to keep him attached to his dog friends.

the end is near ~ thing 27 beach photos

I took some photos of my chilly walk down to the beach with my awesome dog Amos. Here’s some photos of found objects. Yesterday I completed my 20 hour painting experience workshop which felt  pretty awesome (& exhausting)  to just make make make. So awesome, that I’m not posting photos of that experience for public critique but thanxs for asking!

New Years baking… Halibut dogbones

These were made with love for Amos at New Years. He gave away most of his last batch so he helped me rotate out the bottom of the freezer fish. Corey helped make the purees ~ straight baked halibut from Klemtu BC ~ carrots, garlic and my summer greenhouse parsley plant ~ flour, sea salt, veg soup cubes, powder.

I was surprised the cats didn’t love them because Corey came close to biting one. I cut the strips into cubes and have a winter supply for my happy dog.

Remember Salal’s birthday

Happy Remember Day Canada!

I’m sure all “cat-people” at one time say they never thought they’d be a cat person and post photos of their cat online.  Salal turns 10 years old today. He was rescued during a child protection child removal from a foster home on the  Old Masset reserve on Haida Gwaii. I was not a cat person but heard the squeal and went nuts taking him home. My admin also ran the SPCA on island and hooked me up with all the gear and knowledge. I  named Salal after the BC wild blueberry bush that grows up to the armpits on Haida Gwaii and also here on Quadra Island.

Amos nursed him and I brought him to work for 6 weeks and fed him with an eye dropper. He hid under my clothes in major meetings, diffused MANY an angry reluctant youth counselling session and became a car cat, as a result. He’s super healthy and tolerates his cat brother Estevan. He likes to jump in the bathe with Kate. Even my dad loved him. Here’s some of my favs photos over time of Salal-berry-Jam-face.

VLOG from the spring… remixed.

I’d like to say that I’m one of those “creative people that BLOG or VLOG every day, as a form of their disciplined art process”.. but I’m just not. My attention span is way too short. If the sun is shining, I am outside. If my man is home, I am.. gardening. winks*. So a rash of posts come your way today, enjoy*

************************************************************************************************************************************************

An earlier version aired on youtube in May. This sunny day, gave me the chance to edit most of my squealing out and bad hair.

I’m considering doing more VLOGs.. from all around Quadra. What do you think?

I’ve also recently figured out that when we search for things, say on GOOGLE or in the SEARCH window of websites such YOUtube or WordPress.com …. the words we use are actually called “tags” (lesson for dad).  So tracking my BLOG statistics,  I get more hits if I post common or porno ish tags. I had more than a hundred hits yesterday and 4 comments (thanks Dad & Kate). So I am doing a test of sorts for the next couple months. I’m going to randomly use TAG words & see what happens. Or posting half nudes seems to draw a crowd. Have I just cracked the code regarding  the birth of internet pornogrpahy? laughing.

Exciting stuff. I need more work. But I’m writing this off as a creative outlet for today.

enjoy my technology stumblings.

MAKE SOMETHING EVERY DAY,

heart, me.

((Kate- is it EVERYDAY or EVERY DAY ?) lol.
