How’s that for an update? 

HELLO BLOG friends, followers and favouriters! I’m back. WE are back. WE are three now!

My husband and I welcomed Fern Marion Myers-Burt into the world on March 14, 2013. Yes indeedy. And she’s awesome! I have missed blogging and all of you and this community.  I HAVE MISSED MAKING SOMETHING EVERY DAY! I endeavor to get deeper into art and craft and art therapy for myself in the coming three months that I have “off”. Come along for the ride, if you’d like. Not to worry – I’m not going to go all mommy on my blog ~but that will be part of the posts for the next month or so ~for sure. I mean look at this baby…C’MOOOOON she’s cute.

Some disclaimers: I’ve got baby brain, yes I do.. so please forgive the frequency and hilarity of my lack of vocab creativity, typos and spelling mistakes. At least I am here, right? yeah me! Other than baby related craft and prep ~ I made almost no art for my entire pregnancy or the last 10 weeks. This was a surprise to me. I figured the opposite to be true. This next month will get me caught up, organize the baby stuff / thoughts and prepped to make stuff.

HAPPY NEW YEAR.. baby!

Well, it’s a DIY with my husband ! Here’s a pregnancy update ~ We are at 30 weeks on New Years! Holy cow, heh?

Trimester three is going swimmingly (see posts of me eating chocolate and baked goods, finally!) I’m about to start behaving now that the holiday is over. Back to daily either ~ walking, prenatal yoga or swimming. Anywho.. it’s hard to take a flattering photo at this stage so here you go. Professional photos are booked in another month! My husband took me out to a fancy dinner ~I got to wear a fascinator I’ve been dying to wear for a while ~ and got lots of compliments on it ~  OMG truffle oil shoestring fries, wild mushroom soup and beet, goat cheese, pear and pecan salad. YUM.

My sweety has been taking VERY good care of me. xo

Turtles Cupcakes!

Today I made some Nestle turtle chocolate cupcakes. Basically, you bake chocolate cupcakes half way then place a turtle chocolate on them, with more cupcake mixture, and put it back in for another 10 minutes. The recipe is below. If you look at the photo  you can see that I left them in a little too long (we have a brand spankin’ new oven and all appliances.. thanks daddsy! ~and even though i put it on 15 degrees less than the recipe said- it cooked very quickly). So the photo at bottom is the halfway point. They were naughty and decent, not incredible. Husband review? “they would have been better heated up so they’d be gooey. (recipe actually says to do that) But they were cupcakes with turtles in them.. c’mooon!” IMG_3998

We spent the weekend xmas tree decorating, xmas card writing, wrapping and mailing packages for family and friends who live away, lighting up our yard etc.. very fun this year in our new house! Next year will be even more exciting and different with a newborn’s xmas! This week I also spent time decorating other parts of the house with swag. Messy and fun to be creating again ! This weekend and next week’s goals for me? The NURSERY and start some fun xmas baking. If you look back at last year’s xmas blog entries, we did a lot of firsts for baking. I’m thinking of redoing … mint and choc beaver damns and pine nut and smoked salmon tarts! For starters.

The Nursery Before. It’s Happening.

Well blog friends, it’s HAPPENING! I’m officially in my third trimester and nesting like a mad womyn. With xmas coming and both working, we have a lot on the go and minimal time off but slowly we are making some changes in our awesome new house. I’m posting before nursery photos in order to motivate myself! Stay tuned in the next 2 weeks for the final room (before xmas for sure). I’ve also included a Pregnancy Breakfast of Champions shot. My awesome husband makes me a shake every morning ~ berries, greek yogurt, banana, almond milk. I take all the other vitamins with it, to make sure our future baby attends college.

Well, I experimented with a second rescue remedy recipe for my cat Salal. Although he has perhaps doubled (?) his weight in a month ~ and for sure his energy and fiest has tripled.. I thought I’d vary up his diet and try this one. Again ~  easy to make  and he loves it. I promise to use cheaper chicken next time, babe.

Kitty Does Have Nine Lives

After our awesome, sweet heart of a dog passed on in May, I began to wonder if its best friend Salal ~was experiencing depression?  The grey, 11 year old cat from Haida Gwaii, lost his spunk & appetite in a matter of  3 weeks. Nothing we offered helped. I force fed him for weeks after our travelling vet told us it was renal (kidney) failure.  (which was not a joy for my husband or myself). He bit through endless syringes and turkey basters.  I was not giving up. Recently, we added the stress of moving to this list. The move went well. Plan B. We added a small dose of daily vallium to his routine. His appetite came back but he didn’t gain any weight. He also looked like a drunk at 2 am in his back legs, which was at first funny ~then sad.
Plan C!    I visited our new neighborhood vet, a naturopathic and Chinese medicine based healer. She was awesome! Tree of Life Vet. I didn’t have an ap’t but she answered my questions in the waiting room. She photocopied 2 recipes for cat renal failure and I bought a tub of powder to put on it.
I went from there to the grocer and spent $25 on 2 months fresh ingredients. The salmon was a score as I got a huge tray of ends (it didn’t need to be pretty).  It looked like poop, lol.  Long story shorter…. Salal is wolfing down his food – both the salmon recipe & regular kibble and is off the meds. His gaunt cheeks are regaining their chub! Yeah me & new vet! I’m making another batch today & will tell you about the chicken recipe next month.

My Husband is a Tart

No, he’s not really. But it sounds catchier than “my husband makes amazing chicken pot pie”. Smerk*. I mentioned to my husband a week ago that my current pregnancy craving was for chicken pot pie – home style comfort food. A couple days later, I came home from work and he had baked a dozen giant ones from scratch! So sweet, heh? His first crust was too pie like (tho lovely + buttery), so we cheated and got tender flake mini pie crusts, to use up the rest of the filling last night. I think I ate 7 of them. Don’t judge me… I’m pregnant. I love you baby and baby.

Borscht!

After feedback, I experimented with extras… And now it is good, ya! I also put it all in the blender before ziploc freezing. Yum, hello fall, I admit you are here by opening my soup making season. Happy belated Gobble Gobble.

Here’s a quick blog entry to let you all know that my intentions to blog have been over come by the move into our new house, have guests 4 days later, have a guest for week and a half, go to Vancouver and back and a fabulous turkey day celebration! Not to mention a bit of unpacking and re-organizing life.. oh and buying a Smartcar! I guess that’s a few updates, non? Did I mention I’m pregnant?

Any who… here’s my handsome husband’s turkey this year. We hosted 9 in our new house and it was awesome.

My parents took an annual turkey photo throughout their marriage so we are as well. Thanks to our family and Kate for joining us and Corey for being a great chef

and thanks to my Dad who buys the annual largest bird he can find. xo.

Storage Wars & Moving Day

 We have been loving this show. It’s so ridiculous but maybe it speaks to the voyeur or the thrifter in me? I do love looking in people’s windows at night and seeing their “stuff”. I admit it. So this reality  show is about auctioning unclaimed or unpaid storage units at locker facilities in the USA. There’s all kinds of copy cat shows out now that are not as good. Berry is my fav. We moved this past weekend from the small island to the big island. Between loads in the Budget truck I took this photo on our front lawn. It made me wonder about what people would bid on if this was a storage unit up for auction? lol. As well, it made me wonder about judgements people would make of us based on our stuff. It’s just stuff but it does say a lot about oneself.

On that note ~ while I was waiting for the delivery pizza on the small island that took over an hour and the guys that it was for were long gone on the ferry ~ the pizza guy / taxi man was circling my lawn items (5 minutes after he should have been gone). I came out and asked “what the?”. He started offering me money for the guitars!

I’m also cheating here a lot when i add these photos as part of my 38 Inspring Objects (before i turn 39 next month!).

#13    The CLOTHING OPTIONAL SIGN. This sign deserves it’s own blog entry but having moved, time is tight for creative writing. I painted this sign on sanded driftwood about 4 years ago when we first moved to Quadra. We have given this sign away and taken it back in a FREE pile at a garage sale. We have now moved again with and will find a saucy place to post it.

#14  The vintage French Provincial Chair. This chair was purchased as a set in kimberley Bc atthe last house I woned. My contractor knew a lady who was moving into a retirement home and had it in plastic for decades! I scored it. The couch was like 10 feet long so gifted it to my neighbour across the street who was also my rental care taker when i moved aaway and rented the place. They have been raising two awesome littel boys on it. wehen I got to uadra, i had the seat reupholstered in CR. It’s about to be the breast feeding chair in our nursery (in say 6 months). Love this chair. So does our cat Salal ( this the reupholsyter)

#15  my record collection. Have I already mentioned that? My other blog is click here for my JUST FOR THE RECORDS ~ DAILY DOSE OF VINYL 365 day project. Boxes and boxes of thrift and gifted records and some from my childhood that I’m creating a collection with.

#16 U Brew equipment. It may seem like a silly thing but we do enjoy (well until I recently got knocked up) making our own fun beverages at home. We’ve made all sorts of fruit beers, wines, port, champagne, mexican beer etc. Some from berries we’ve picked (as seen in previous posts).

#17  My wedding dress. Yes, if you look hard enough you can see my wedding dress in a pile. I’m thinking to Craigslist it next month but it was a surprisingly beautiful exereince shopping for and wearing it. love love love. See posts 2 years ago Feb for wedding photos.

#18 My Nana’s tea cups. My lovely late Nana left me (well my Dad) a lot of special and valuable antiques. We have been using some of it and storing and moving x4 most of it. I’m excited to use her tea cups in the new place!

THANK YOU to my sweetheart of a husband for doing MOST of the moving! I have a LOT of craft stuff. I mean, a LOT. And thanks to great friends Sean & Aren for showing up on move day! So sweet. And special thanks to Aren for the Lasagna, garlic bread and ceasar salad that we have been eating all week! Thanks Dad for helping unpack us!

Should we Fry our Green Tomatoes or store them?

If you read my last post, you’ll know we’ve been busy beavers all summer. And you’d know we bought a house and we move in just 2 weeks! That said, I’m wondering about the garden this weekend trying to decide what stays, goes, gets dehydrated etc. During my luxurious nap this afternoon (after which my husband made me homemade wide baked fries and chipolte aoile- he’s the best, non?).. I did some painful and some helpful youtube research on harvest. I learned that green tomatoes can be cut on their stem, wrapped in newspaper and stored in a dark, cold box to rippen. I was also educated that they give off a gas called ethalyne  (spell?) and that rippens them. You can fake that chemical by placing an apple in the box or even hanging it by a vine of tomatoes to make them turn quicker. I will try the latter and let you know if that works, If not, I’ll be boxing a tomatoe and a cherry tomatoe plant next weekend!  This guy explains to it well and is easy on the eyes:

Our Day in Local Produce

Although we can’t wait to move off this overpriced tourist destination of an island, I have to say in the summer there is something to be said for leading a lifestyle based on the 100 mile diet ~ if you can. Yesterday Corey forced me off the couch to go blackberry picking, again. It’s an annual tradition with us, one that we swore we’d take more seriously this season. It’s a dangerous but yummy sport. Full chain metal clothing required. Three afternoons have been spent so far with a few more to go. What are we using them for? Our morning smoothies, beer & wine making, fruit roll ups, desserts.. you name it. I’m considering writing a therapy article entitled something like “The Couple that Picks Berries Together, Stays Together“. What do you think?

After berry picking we head to Fox road to our favourite EGG guy. I also buy handmade croched face and kitchen cloths from his daughter. Both items are found with an honour system for cash trade in this adorable fridge at the end of their farm driveway. The cat in the egg photo is a curious Salal (our cat).

   

As we drove back down the road we spot this… (dad will surely comment on the budweiser flat)

Further around the corner we see two red coolers with a “VEGGIES” sign. We stop and again on the honour system purchase these yellow beans and 6 hot peppers. What a hoot. Total spent for local produce in one afternoon? $6.50.Now I’d love to be one of those righteous “organic” (said with nose in the air) people that we are about to surround ourselves with on our next move in two weeks.. SEE BLOG TOMORROW ! but the truth is ~ from there we went and purchased a $30 pizza. Yes, that’s what I said. A $30 pizza at the only place on the island to get take out pizza. lol. And it was good. We finished our pizza and bottled a pinot grigio wine, in our rental bathroom for the last time. Quadra Island your days are numbered.

Berry Picking is a Labour of Love *or* What to Do with a Kajillion Huckleberries?

It’s that time of the year again. So much fun to wander around the yard in barely any clothes and pick your dessert… or pick your smoothie ingredients for the next day… or? What do you do with huckleberries?

We’ve never lived where there are so many bushes of them, so we thought we’d give it a go this year. My Love bought an actual Berry Scoop from Lee Valley, when we there earlier in the month. It’s pretty amazing. Though, it’s still a labour of love separating greenery and bugs etc from berries and storing them. We just started tonight. My Love had to climb the cherry tree ~ they are ready but super high up! I saw a raven the size of an eagle in that tree today.  Competition is tuff. It’s not even fully salmonberry or blackberry seasons yet. See blog posts this time last year. What we also have on the horizon are three kinds of apple trees and a plum tree. yippee. Missing in these photos? Strawberries ~ we ate them promptly while picking.

things that grow down by the bog

There is a huge bog at the back of the property that in the winter looked desolate with no foliage. Now, it has a giant field of these flowers surrounding it. They are chest height with beautiful yellow flowers. And some bug friends. Flag Iris. Iris pseudacorus is a species of iris, native to Europe, western Asia and northwest Africa. Common names include yellow iris and yellow flag. Its specific epithet, meaning “false acorus,” refers to the similarity of its leaves to those of Acorus calamus, as they have a prominently veined mid-rib and sword-like shape. Iris pseudacorus grows best in very wet conditions, and is often common in wetlands, where it tolerates submersion, low pH, and anoxic soils. The plant spreads quickly, by both rhizome and water-dispersed seed. It fills a similarniche to that of Typha and often grows with it, though usually in shallower water. While it is primarily an aquatic plant, the rhizomes can survive prolonged dry conditions.

This is what exploded in a weekend and covered the topsy turvy plants, that we had to move. This a huge gorgous trellis that runs the length of the garden fence. Wisteria! Wisteria (also spelled Wistaria or Wysteria) is a genus of flowering plants in the pea family, Fabaceae, that includes ten species of woody climbing vines native to the Eastern United States and to ChinaKorea, and Japan.

This plant is also growing down by the bog. It is currently over our heads. I think it’s an African plant? Each leaf is approx 3-4 feet in diameter. Huge. In the fall we put a giant load of raked maple leaves on it for the winter.  I wonder if we can eat any part of it? Another bog lovin plant! wiki:     Gunnera is a genus of herbaceous flowering plants, some of them gigantic. The genus is the only member of the family Gunneraceae.The 40-50 species vary enormously in leaf size. Gunnera manicata, native to the Serra do Mar mountains of southeastern Brazil, is perhaps the largest species, with leaves typically 1.5-2 m (5-6 ft) wide, but exceptionally long, up to 3.4 m (11 ft), borne on thick, succulent leaf stalks (petioles) up to 2.5 m (8 ft) long. It germinates best in very moist, but not wet, conditions and temperatures of 22 to 29 °C.

topsy turvy check in

Let’s check in with the topsy turvy planters, shall we? Planted them 2 months ago. Organic soil, peat, super easy to put together and the root systems grow upwards heated by the plastic container. cool. My sweety helped hang them in a different place in teh garden a month ago because the vine they were planted under blew up into a zillion green leaves and flowered into gorgeous dangling delicate purple flowers. Now out tof the shade they are fabulous.

We’ve eaten 2 dozen little plump fully red strawberries so far. The tomatoe plants.. i busted a huge stem off while bragging to said sweety about the progress. That said, they’ve both tripled and are flowering yellow now! Our June on the coast, was the westest / rainiest on record ..so welcome to the hot July growing season! Stay tuned for harvest end of August, I’m guessing? So with zero effort and being super cheap I’m a fan of the upside down garden thingmes. Have you tried the As Seen on TV Topsy Turvy? Yet another reason for YouTube~ to learn how to stuff a chicken breast. I had no idea. The above was entertaining & Julia is lovely as always but below is really helpful. Especially about putting the breast in a ziploc before pounding it! Smart.

adventures of my green thumbs begins.

I’m learning how to garden! I know, exciting right? Living in this glorious retreat ~ and by glorious I mean a whole lotta “free” work on our end while paying someone else’s mortgage… Anywho.. the gardens are spectacular, at last!  I’ve been weeding and cutting flowers for vases for both my therapy offices and for both bathrooms and the kitchen, in the house. Awesome. So I have spent some time photographing the progress and I thought i’d start sharing photos of new finds, researching what they are and anything interesting about them, how to close down stuff as it dies (we had this overwhelming daffodil bed by the front door that I discovered I was supposed to trim after it died off.. leading me to wonder.. do I have to remove the greens from all bulbous plants after they kick it? I dunno). *** see middle photo with the ends of the poppies. This weeks’ fav flower is the peone. Have you smelt a peone lately? Oh man. This is the flower to put in the bathroom that really makes a difference after the mano f the house does his morning business. And what a great name. Did I even spell it correctly? Also pictured here is my new fav summer drink The Orchard peach Cider. yum. And I managed a craft placement of my fish ice cubes! As well, my arms took a serious beating when I tried to pick the pretty pink roses that have sprouted up everywhere! eek.

It was a strong start to the fishing season, yesterday June 17, th, 2012.. Fathers Day. Yes! Johnny Cash week this week consisted of my dad, myself and my handsome husband on re -con of the Quinsam River in Campbell River, in Beautiful Bristish Columbia. With JC playing in the car, the sun trying to peek out.. off we went.

The stats? A few bites, nothing caught but a lovely afternoon on the banks of the Quinsam river, below the hatchery. Um, it’s gorgous~ just outside of Campbell River. Myself, I’m an ocean girl so I’m looking forward to the future “we have a boat days” (shh baby, I know, there there, we’ll get a boat someday!) ~the ocean sick days out on the pacific ocean swells. You can call me “Ginger” then.

Bacon Wrapped Corn on the Cob

That’s what I said. Is there no shame? BBQ husband extraordinaire (I’ve never touched the thing but that’s another story for another time) was handed a few items for the BBQ, when he arrived home tonight. I got the idea for this recipe from a podcast on CBC radio3 about summer and bbq’s and surf music. It was blasted all afternoon while I gardened.. see other post about today’s romp in the garden, in the sun. Then I looked it up  and found this recipe click here for foodnetwork bacon corn recipe We saw the potential for a seriously naughty yummy treat but our corn was not quite in season. It was motivation for sure, to try it again n season.

We also bbq’d up some some portobello mushrooms ~I made a garlic butter and sea salt scrub for them and marinated for 30 mins before the bbq master took them to meet their maker. I also threw together some Old Mill Cornmeal and niblet  muffins with feta~organic, gluten-free la de da. They were blah and really too wholesome without the butter, flour and milk. smerk*

Yes! It’s even better than it sounds. We home brewed the wine then took it to the u-brew to bottle a couple weeks ago (I’m drastically behind on posts). Did you know that you can take any kind of wine to get bubbled into champagne? FUN! and Yummy! AND… gluten-free. winks*

It was a long month of March with several power outages and massive storms ~cabin fever was a very real threat for me several times.

With beachcombing being at an all time yearly low ~lots of soup was  prepared and consumed and the dehydrator was running for the last week. I bought giant bags of pears and kiwis (@ Costco Courtenay) and stored them for our lunch snacks. Can you say “nesting?” My Roasted red pepper soup was decent but the husband thought a bit too spicy for diving days. Recipe above. I got out of the habit of photographing stuff as end product but I’m back on track now. yum.

the screamin heebie jeebies & wild rose hips

Nothing brings newly weds together quite like both being sick at the same time. Neither of us have even been sick since we met (2.5 years ish ago) so this week was an extra special one. We are on day 4 of cold & flu ~he missed work for 3 days, I missed my 4 day weekend. But we are on the mend. Cabin fever has for sure set in, especially for our dog. It gives me a day on the couch under several variations of blanket, to update my 365 blogs! The record blog is getting a great response and I am loving all the music and research that goes with the posts. These are the rose hips I picked at our place in the fall, dried out and made tea with last week. This week we drank jars of it for the Vit C!!

 the chick is annoying but there are great facts about rose hips in this video.

   We bottled wine & beer but have been too sick to really try either of them! I got my sweety grolsch style glass bottles with ceramic tops on Craigslist via a German brewery.

Bake Sale!

HAPPY NEW YEAR to all my lovely blog readers! I made a ton of stuff in the last 2 weeks but as many of your lives were.. mine was also busy. Here’s a recap of the seemingly large bake sale we hosted over Xmas.   We didn’t actually attend any and don’t have any kids ~ it was an intimate gathering of west coast family of 3 & several animals ~full of maple butter stuffed turkey (30lbs!) and cashew apple dressing. My husband is a rock star chef and I stepped up to the plate with several baking experiments. Here’s a sampling:  Chocolate coffee and bacon cupcakes (type that into the search for the recipe on this blog this past year). My sweety made enough sugar and cream cheese cookies for an elementary school which we lovingly decorated like school kids ~ while listening to many xmas vinyl’s ~2 shown below. We would have eaten these two cats because they were such bad kitties this holiday but they were too adorable at photo opps. I made Haystacks ( I renamed Beaver dams) in both butterscotch and also mint and chocolate ~both with peanut butter and chow mein noodles (recipe from Nana on this blog). Not shown but previously blogged were peanut butter balls ~ they were my fav and went first ~ my husband’s ginger bread cookies & turkey dog bones. Hope I didn’t forget anything. winks*

“Why is this the name of your website?” Well, living on Quadra near the ocean, beachcombing is one of my fav things to do. And one of the only things to do come winter storm season. I was shocked the first summer we lived here, at how much colourful plastics littered our “david Suzuki” beaches. So.. I started picking it up. Piece by piece, my pockets and pockets of my husband were getting full. I started bringing a reusable bag on our walks. It got filled daily, during the winter months especially. I would lean over to pick up a plastic lid, a buoy, or an old, empty oil bottle that I had guessed was tossed over or wind blow off a ship at sea. YARRR ! I make stories up to myself or with husband about our best daily treasures. Even the tampons. Corey calls them “beach whistles” and uses a Russian accent to say “vat iz dis beach vistle?”. (I think from a movie?). Hygeine products and shoes are the only items that I discriminate against, all else goes in the bag. Hygiene products for obvious reasons and shoes.. well, that’s usuall just creepy finding the one flip or baby runner ~but in recent years there have been over a dozen feet / leg parts found in shoes that have washed ashore in the Vancouver region. So yeah. Of course, finding glass balls and eagles feathers are an added bonus. More posts about those items this winter!
